Question 79 Harley 1000 Roadster Carb

Hi all- I was curious if anyone knows what the original carb was on this bike. (79 Roadster) Currently has an S&S shorty, and I am having constant mixture issues.. Ready to turn my mixture screw into a T-handle that I can adjust while riding! :-P If not the original what Carb do you run on your Ironhead? I know 79 is a bit of a transitional year for Harley, so I am having a tough time finding any good material on that fuel/air system. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Enjoy the weekend all!!

It originally came with a keihin butterfly carburetor. I'm running one of those on my 73 xlch and after actually getting it clean and jetted it works fine. I also have a super e on my 79 and your comments about the mixture make me wonder if your screw or spring is worn because I really don't have to mess with that.

The Keihin CV off newer bikes is a popular upgrade if you don't want to stick with the S&S. Usually inexpensive secondhand, but you will need a manifold adapter.

Is there a support for the carb/air cleaner? Make sure you don't have an intermittent intake leak that's acting like a mixture problem.

I troubleshoot by replacing the intake seals rather than checking old ones for leaks if they were not recently replaced. (I keep spare seals so I have one on bench stock since they don't last forever.) Ensure you have a solid carb brace though the included strap is better than nothing. The clamps are for sealing.

Make sure your idle mixture screw has the O-ring, 57 in the exploded view:

I use the size info to buy Viton or Buna O-rings by the bag dirt cheap via Ebay. They aren't special other than you need Viton or Buna for fuel resistance. This random example shows why I do that instead of paying proprietary prices for standard parts. It's nice to have a lifetime supply and spares for my bros:

The butterfly Keihins do work well. We used to take them off big twins when installing cams and pipes then sell them to customers with worn out Bendixes etc. The CV is better still and if it had been available when I started my HD fleet I'd have run that on my Ironhead instead of an S&S which are nice and simple but a bit large for a 1000cc engine.
