I don't know if anyone has done enough actual research on the breather timing to nail it. The only figure I can remember seeing was OB listing 27 ATDC. But that was for blue printed KR's.
Would that change for a 900 ? Yes, I'm sure. Would that change for a 1000 ? Yes, I', sure it would. But the KR's ran to 6,000 and the Sportsters can run to 7,000.
What happens when you build a 1365 cc engine that only runs to 5,500 ?

What happens when you block the transfer valve to run a dry primary ?

What happens when you add a hose to the breather tube to dump the oil mist somewhere other than your rear tire ?

I'm not even sure the problems with oil in the sump were totally caused by the breather timing. Probably it is but ......

Maybe the oil scrapers were not as close to the wheels on some engines. Maybe the transfer gallery was a little rougher cast in some engines ?

You can always shim the pinion gear (or remove some material or swap for another one until you get it perfectly centered in the window.

Will you gain anything ?

Who knows ? On a stock engine the problem never seems to rear it's ugly head. Or maybe it does and we don't notice it ?
If we don't notice it is it worth worrying about ?

If you do build it as a race engine do you take into account changes you make and the revs you run at ?

So, what figure do you change it too ?

At lower rpm's a narrow window probably works fine. As the rpm's rise the time the window is open reduces and possibly there's not enough time for the pressure drop to occur fully. Widening the window would fix that. But there may also be an optimum closing point and that may then be effected.

Questions, questions, so many questions.

Is this why Bill Werner invented the mini sump ?
