I can't see why 2 slots wouldn't work, even more if you wanted. Its all trail and error , do what ever works for you.

I did test it. Installed some old bearings into my hub and found it was easier for me to drive it from the slotted end using the spacer to knock out the bearing on the other side, but my XR rear wheel is probably wider than an XL.

I can't claim the idea as mine as I have seen used in other applications in the mining industry, an industry I've been working in for the last 35 years.

Looks fine to me. The notch only needs to be as wide as your punch end and only needs to be in one end of the spacer.
Me be doing this next change.
