I live in Seattle, which is pretty hilly, and this bike just pulls up them without being finicky about what gear I'm in, unlike my Ducati. I commute on the Sportster quite a bit, and my only complaint is the clutch heaviness (not a lot of hand strength).

I love the four speed transmission and how light and nimble the bike is. There's something fulfilling and visceral about it. It's why I wanted a first-generation evolution Sportster - it's a vintage-feeling experience, but with the better reliability of the Evo engine. Obviously, from this thread's contents, there are some issues. But I wouldn't change my decision, even though I once posted here that I wish I had bought a five speed. I'd like to get a five speed at some point and build up the engine, but my '88 isn't going anywhere.
Thank you for your feedback, Lia. I really appreciate your comments. I'm not in a rush to buy, so the delayed response isn't a problem. Your assessment was definitely worth the wait!

Thanks Flame__

I'll take that as a cue to post a pic. I still need to find the time to polish the rocker box covers and do some more detailing, but I'm too busy riding, lol.

Wow, Flame wasn't kidding; that is a sweet bike! Can you tell more about it, or do you have a build thread?

Thanks! Here's the original build thread. Started out to be a cafe project, but became more of a standard. Nothing too fancy ... mostly stock '88 883 with cosmetic updates. Arlen Ness Big Sucker I air cleaner kit, rebuilt/rejetted carb, and the Supertrapp 2/1. Biltwell Tracker bars and a no-name eBay mini-fairing. I trimmed the stock rear fender and reshaped a seat from an '88 XLH1200. Front fender is a fiberglass one from I forget what company, and tank is from Lowbrow Customs. Went with the old Dodge Plum Crazy purple for the paint.
