VaFish, I will tell you that the new Softail package is a much better package than the Dyna, and as far as the old Softail, I can not even think why people bought it, the handling was terrible.
Most of the guys complaining have not tried a ride on the new Softail. I have demoed it twice and will tell you that it handles great and has more power than ever. The M8 actually is a engine that comes from the factory with great power.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I think it is time for some DO to keep them a driving force in the future.

Bike names have come and gone, I remember when Fat BoB was a style of tank, not a model. I still refer to the Tour Glide which is now the Road Glide. Do they even call the Electriglide that anymore or is it something else now?
Point is this is not going be a name change, it is going be an engine change and maybe with that a cooling platform change.

I think what us feared the most is water cooling the bike. I could deal with that. But others will scream heresy.

I wonder what happened when the Hydro glide was introduced, did everyone scream heresy because suddenly they introduced rear suspension?

Jammantoo,

I'm purposely not test riding a new softtail.

I was going to do a test ride and then an old guy told me that motorcycles were like women. As long as you don't go riding another one you are happy with the one you got.

And I can't afford a new softtail right now. So I'll just be happy with what I've got.

Screw water cooled overhead cam shit. If I wanted one I would ride a Kawasaki. Wait, I do. I also have a Vulcan. Very complex overhead cam, V-twin engine design. Fast yes, smooth yes, fun yes. But I always wanted a Harley. Once the Sporty is up and running the Vulcan is going and I have no plans to go back!

If i would like to own a tech superbike i would have bought elsewhere...
Yet... nevertheless... for Mo.Co. is time to refresh the XLs

IMO

mandatory

keep pushrods
NO water cooling
4 valves each head
Traction Control (if you have a powerful low grunt IMO TC is not an option)
pre mapped tunes

and maybe

oil cooled
twin spark

and...

at least a version with top notch suspensions

simply as that

I love my 97 Sportster, but I test rode the Indian Scout last summer. It is a sweet ride. But if I get rid of the Sporster it will be for a bigger touring bike. The one thing the Sportster doesn't do for me is two up touring. So far the wife has no desire to ride on the bike so it's not a pressing problem.

I am not getting rid of my sportsters, but boy am I enjoying the time I spend in the seat of my ‘18 scout 60. Both may be in the same category, but they are different animals, and I can enjoy both.

It is not a matter of want, it is a matter of being able to sell it. Face it when emission regulations say "nope you cannot sell that anymore." you have to abide. 2020 is going be here in a year and a half.
