Heh heh heh... yeah, I love it - dirt bikes and old men. Most of us probably started there, before we were old enough for a license. Mine was a Hodaka Combat Wombat in the early to mid 1970's, then an RM 125, then a KR (I think that was the designation) 250. Sold that one when I got married, although I did manage to hang onto the 1976 'CH (still have it today).

Fast forward 30 some odd years, and I got a hankering to play in the dirt again, so I bought a 2002 XR650L and began heavily modifying it. Less than six months into it, and my first ER visit, earning two layers of a dozen stitches across the bridge of my nose and across into both eyebrows. An unnoticed stub end of a tree branch that was protruding into the trail got me right between the eyes. Cleaned me right off the bike. Wearing a motocross type helmet, that damn branch just did fit the face opening. What incredible luck...

Well, that was almost ten years ago, and I still have the bike. Amazingly, my wife didn't insist I sell it. My riding has changed, though - I've "calmed down" a good deal. 61 year old bones, joints, muscles, skin, just don't heal as fast as 21 year old.

Some of my riding buddies still race old timer motocross. One of their "rules" is that your race number be reflective of your number of ER visits...

Yeah, dirt is fun, but it sure can be hard on us old guys...

Ric, cactus patch doesn’t sound like fun at all.
Paul, my mom told me a lot of lies too.

But I never started in the dirt. My first ever ride on a motorcycle was on a 500 OK Supreme. A very rare bike.

I will be looking for a dirt bike next year (moving onto average) but it will be trials, not motocross. (You know why they call it moto - cross don't you ?)

Many of you can relate, I don’t bounce like I used too and it takes way longer to heal. Still rehabbing the latest total knee replacement.

My new right hip (2020 model year) sure makes it easier to kick over the old Sporty. I would highly recommend it to anyone still running OEM. Aftermarket is much better.

H-D did is best to help Orthopaedist become rich with those knees and ankles surgery; ever have a kick-back from a twin cylinders engine. 😅

The 83 XLS has handlebars on it now. Progress is moving along at a snail's pace. Prep work takes time. Year's of corrosion and layers of old paint take time to remove. All three brake calipers have been cleaned up, painted and mounted. Oil bag has been cleaned, stripped and painted.
