Ignition coil going bad? It would fail when heated up. You could replace it with a new coil, if that does not fix the problem then store the new one away with your spare generator, solenoid, battery, etc Nice to have spare known good parts that are prone to failure.

Yes. I have had this happen. I'd pull up to a stop sign, the engine would slow idle then shut down. If I waited 5 or 10 minutes it would start and run. The last time this happened I was 5 minutes from my indie's shop. Went in, bought new coil, went home, installed, no problem after that.

Another interesting one: pull up to stop sign, it stalls. Short story - loose ignition key, from too many keys on the chain, too heavy, wears out the key switch, new switch, problem solved. Or maybe it was new key?

Gotcha okay ill check the coil, still seems like its getting to much gas too i took the carb off this morning and there was still a lot of gas on the manifold

When you open the throttle on a carburetor the first thing that happens is you let in more air. Without compensation the mixture will become too lean and the engine will stall.
We compensate by having the intermediate jet a little too rich but even then, there is a period when the mixture will be too weak. This can be very noticeable on some carburetors if you snap the throttle open. AKA an S&S Super B.
To overcome this we add an accelerator pump that squirts in raw fuel when we snap the throttle open. This generally just floods the engine but it works fairly well at eliminating the flat spot.

So you do need to make sure the accelerator pump is working correctly.

But most often the problem is a weak mixture, not a too rich mixture.

Coil problems often show up as a misfire at higher revs pulling third or forth gear. If the spark is weaker than is should be as conditions get more difficult inside the combustion chamber the spark may not be able to "Spark".

If you leave your ignition on for too long while the engine isn't running and the points are closed the coil has current running through it and can eventually damage the insulation around the winding's which in effect reduces the number of turns of wire and reduces the coils output.
You can measure the resistance of these winding's and it should tell you what kind of condition the coil is in. A simple ohm meter will do that. All you need to know is the correct resistance for that coil.

And yes, they are affected by heat. Probably the worst place you can install your coil would be right over the top of a hot engine.

But nobody does that.
