Many years ago you could get away with rubbish brakes. When cars had plastic rim protectors for tires and 4 drum brakes, bikes could stop much faster than the average General Motors or Ford products.
Today, with wide sticky tires and power disc brakes combines with ABS riding a 69 Sportster on the street is "problematical".
Yes, yes, I know it can be done and I do it myself. But you really need to be aware of what your doing.

I keep trying to tell people it's really really important to run good tires. Spend your money on them. And spend money and time on your brakes. If you have money left over that you can spend it on your suspension.
The engine can be an afterthought.
