ok-I used a cooler plug and its getting better - still coughs and farts occasionally, not near as much as it did, and the detonation is a lot better. I did the drop idle method again and was able to get the idle near 900-920 and the IMS at 2.5 turns.

i bought this bike in June and it was 90+ here in NC, now its 55 or so. Would the cooler weather make it lean or rich?

I'm still at 45 pilot - N65 needle with 2 shims - 175 main and 2.5 turns.

^^
Cooler/denser air will lean it out the mixture some. On the occasions I get the bike out in 50 degree weather or thereabouts, I have turn the mixture screw a tad to fatten it up a little otherwise I get the carb coughs/stutters.

Haven't had time to read up on it. I feel like the carb may be close to right. But the lean condition needs to be dealt with. Recap...45 pilot, N65C needle with one shim, 175 main. IMS a tad more than 2.5 turns, drag pipes with baffles. Small round TCBros air cleaner. More wrenching tomorrow. Going to the dragstrip today. Thank you all again for your time
Sounds about like normal for drag pipes. My '98 had them when I inherited it. The mids were horrible, top end was weak, the plugs stayed "whitish". Changed to slip-ons and it was a whole different bike-- the mids tuned right in. I later added the S&S tear drop air cleaner, and that gave me strong response in the top-end. Drag pipes are good for drag racing--period. If its not WOT, then you're going to have "issues" with throttle response.
Just my $00.02 worth, hope you get the response these frame- mounted Sportsters are capable of.
Good Luck,
Joe

I made the drag pipe experiment back in the '80s compared to stock crossover exhaust and gutted mufflers (press out the welch plugs with a hydraulic press while protecting the other end of the muffler with scrap wood). The crossovers breathe nicely once uncorked but I had to downsize my jets to run drags and they were still fecal. The stock crossover went back on and stayed there. Successful car drag racers have used crossover pipes for generations too because they work! Bonus is the stock Sporty pipes are durable and dirt cheap used. They still sound like a Harley unlike 2-into-1s for those who care.

Cycleshack makes drag pipes that use the rubbermount crossover tube. My bike had them on when I bought it. They had HP Plus baffles too. They worked really well for drag pipes but had to go when I did cams.

Not sure if this was intentional, but it’s pretty appropriate.

I concur...and even have my own theory about "why" the crossover works based on some study of a book on the Exhaust theory that I have..
