What do you mean if a pushrod bottoms out. I still don't understand how the clutch can be related to the pushrods. They're part of 2 separate systems - the engine and the transmission.

I only felt it slip in 2nd gear. I didn't try to explore if it would slip in another gear. It wasn't jumping because when it slipped it was like it was in neutral.

i believe Rick is talking about clutch adjusting screw pushrod, not the valve pushrods.

He is talking about the pushrod that goes from the right side of the primary right through to the pressure plate. When you pull the clutch cable, some mechanism on your bike pushes that rod to the left which pushes the pressure plate away from the clutch plates.

I don't have an Ironhead, so I haven't seen the mechanism that pushes the rod. Pushrods like that are common in dirt bikes. The later sportster's have a ball ramp that as it twists it pulls that pressure plate away from the clutch plates. They both do the same job, just one pushes (yours) and the other pulls.

So, you need to get a manual and adjust the clutch pushrod so that there is slight free play (Rider Rick says 1/2 turn on adjustment screw) so that it is not holding the pressure plate open which allows slipping. The cable only fine tunes the contact point at the lever. When (not if), when the plates wear enough that pressure plate moves closer to the pushrod which eliminates the adjustment for free play that you adjust into the system. No amount of playing with the cable adjustment will ever stop the pushrod from holding the pressure plate back once the plates wear and eliminate that gap. NOTE: there is a throwout bearing involved too. In pushrod systems that is usually between the pushrod and the pressure plate.

If you play with the adjusting screw back and forth, you will see that in one direction it gets into a free zone where there is no pressure on the screw. In the other direction the screw will stop when the pushrod comes into contact with the pressure plate. That is the point where all the free play is gone, and you back it off 1/2 turn into the free zone and lock it down. For kicks, turn the screw past where it comes into contact, and you will feel the pressure building (that pressure is the pressure plate being pushed away from the plates). If you stop there, the clutch will slip to the point of being non existent.

Now with it set at 1/2 turn and locked down, the cable can take a little of that free play out to get the correct feel at the lever, but that adjustment can not give you more free play than what the pushrod adjustment is set for.

Maybe you need to see a diagram of the parts? I am sure you can do that on Sportsterpedia.

wedge the ironhead wet clutch uses a ball and ramp release also.the first clutch used in the evo models the AC clutch started in the late '84 ironhead.used from L84-'90.followed by the Fuji clutch in'91.

ALso set the cable freeplay with the bars straight ahead.
Most cables will change length with the turning of the bars, when riding normally the bars get turned very little off center so that is where you want to set the free play.
