Default pinging

Why is my 4 cylinder Chrysler pinging? New plugs and wires. There is no distributor to adjust the spark advance. So, what gizmos make all this happen on these new computer control cars? Must be sensors that send signals to the pc. There is no vacuum can anywhere.

Low octane gas? I get crappy gas-o-hol cuz they ship the good stuff from my oil boom town overseas through the Texas Pipeline.

It's for the jobs, ya know.

Then again. I also work on my Wifes Chrysler Crossfire. A strange creature indeed. More German than Chrysler. Only premium gas get's into it. It has rich tastes in oil and everything else.

This was my experience with my 2001 Mitsubishi Raider 3.7L V6 which basically was a rebadged Dodge Dakota...after several visits to the dealers, the truck needed a cooler spark plug. The theory is that, because Chrysler has the engine running so hot
(to help meet emission standards), the plugs are actually running too hot
(red hot) and pre-igniting the fuel at times. The dealer replaced the
plugs with a cooler plug (one without the extended tip), and the pinging
went away (when climbing the grade). Unfortunately, I didn't get the part
# of the plugs they used, because we traded the truck in shortly after.
The dealer advises that an even cooler plug may be needed if the pinging
returns in hot weather. So, the process is to keep swapping plugs to the
next cooler part number until the pinging goes away. Once the proper plug
temp is selected, it should be good year round. Veeflys
