Major motorcycle engines share the same oil in engine and gearbox. So if it is specified for both, I don't know why it shouldn't be good for both...

There's a difference between good for(read safe for) and best for. What's best for my motor is not safe for use in wet clutches.

For an engine to operate effectively and efficiently it requires many different qualities from it's motor oil and certainly one of the more important qualities is lubricity; since a clutch is using friction as it's main mechanical function.....probably lubricity is not high on it's list of requirements. Is a compromise between lubricity and friction worthwhile?

Ahh, but the same fluid lubricates the transmission and I'd think the gears and bearings would prefer lubrication over friction ...

And film strength/thickness... Clutch disc's cut thru the film, gears and bearings etc rely on it.

Rarely does a compromise of anything become an ideal situation....I have bought the $20 dollar container of gear oil sold by Harley for my Primary and gearbox......I will use Amsoil 15W-60 in the engine along with K & N chrome filter this time....next time a HD chrome filter will be on my bike (I have read in here it will make my bike go faster). I don't know this for a fact.....but I have been told Indian 15W-60 motorcycle oil is made by Amsoil to a formula (developed by Indian engineers) to help quiet the Indian Scout's engine. I have not been able to find out the Zinc, Phosphorus, Moly PPMs or if they have some other magical additives in the oil.....anybody in here know anything about the Indian motorcycle oil?

Speaking strictly about the Harley XL, I used Mobil 1 in the engine and used Ford Automatic Transmission Fluid in the primary and the gearbox. The XL has a Barnett Scorpion clutch and Barnett recommended the ATF for use with their clutch. I have worn out a few clutches, but never worn out a gearbox enough that it would need repair, other than the shift arms, , no matter what lubricant it had in it. I have put more miles on XL engines and transmissions in just a few years than most bikes get in their life time. My old 2001 XL now belongs to my son, along with the two parts bikes. I ride a 2019 Cam Am Spyder which has an integral lower end. The oil is shared with the engine and transmission. It is also a wet clutch. What is right for one engine may not be right or even possible for all motorcycle engines. The majority of motorcycles I have owned in my life had integral engine and gearboxes. I do realize this is an XL Forum, but many people also own more than one bike and have other brands of bikes with different oil requirements.

Everything I've read on Indian Oil 15W60, is that it has less Zinc and Phosphorus to preserve the catalytic converters. No one says how much is in it, tho. I think Harley Oil has been reformulated this way, too.
