The Motor company removed the splines in the fifties because the K transmissions kept breaking from hard shifting. The no-spline idea was to have the shift lever slip on the shaft rather than transfer the force to the tranny. I don't know what year they went back to a splined shifter.

I bet with a little fabbing a Big Twin heel/toe could be adapted. I have a heel/toe on my Heritage but have never acquired a taste for it.

No fabbing necessary. It's the same shifter. They are identical when you flip them, at least on the 60s bikes.

Thought about that...

Prob is, the later Sportys have the footpeg hard on the shifter shaft, which makes for an odd looking shift arm out front. The heel/toes I'm familiar with are fairly flat; the 'right' H/T shifter would have to have an offset spline (from shifter centerline) to clar the peg on the late Sporty - yet have an elevated heel peg so's y'all dont go below center on a heel upshift.

I had a Dnepr with an integrated clutch/shift mechanism. 60% of the bike was pretty crappy - to be honest - but that combo heel toe and clutch setup was the cat's meow. I could leave lights one handed - clutching and shifting with just my foot. Took 26 discrete parts to comprise the mechanism - all inside the case save for the shifter - and it worked GREAT!

I don't have the part numbers for the heel toe. I do have one, though, and I can at least tell you the casting number (which is probably different from the part number.

The stock shifter, though, for the K model and Sportster is 34606-52. Although the part number stays the same, the casting changes in 58 and the shifter is different (this is often the case, as parts in different years have subtle differences but the same number). I don't have my Panhead parts book at the house, but the panhead shfter is the identical -58 casting.

The years just flew by! Anyway I just thought I'd add to this thread that for sure an Ironhead heel toe shifter also existed on the post 1970 engines. I have a 72 army XLA and it came fitted with such a shifter. Its different from the earlier type as it has a kink in the toe section to clear the contact breaker housing in the timing cover.

No earlier part number in any of the parts books, probably cause earlier, it was an accessory, so check accessory catalogues...
