Starting my build thread. 1972 with electric start. This is the only pic of it put together since I bought it. Started looking it over and started finding this broken, that missing, that broken, this stripped, C/S bearing blown out, pistons galled, oil lines crossed.



Had the cracked 72 case C/S area welded and machined then decided to go with my E73 instead and had that worked on. Had trans area line lapped to accept 72 trans door. Pics later.



Sorry for the blurry pics. I'll work on that.

Have new bearings for rear wheel and swing arm. Waiting on a new left side locknut.



Working on fitting a repro 72 taillight to a repro 73 fender today. It came with a repro tombstone, broken of course.



Brought home a package of preparation H and a tub of GOJO yesterday. Put it on the kitchen counter. The wife thought they went together and the GOJO was a constipation remedy. Go, Joe!

Looks like some solid welding around the C shaft bearing. But because it's machined flat won't the shaft end play shim need to be thicker than the depth of the 1st gear recess it sits in? If not the gear will rub against the case.

Is that groove leading to the bearing for oil? Good idea.

I think so too. But that is a closed bearing, and unless you have a hole in the bearing shell, the only way for the oil to get to the rollers is through the c/s thrust washers, right end. In another thread, it was recommended to make that clearance less than .010". That doesn't leave much room for Formula Plus to seep through...

Still a good idea. Better than not having it.

interesting.for now i'll just comment on the oil slot.the factory used a vertical slot,how would a 45 degreee slot improve on that? gravity being key here.

i would think preparation h and gojo mixed would burn like hell?
at that point you you are praying for gojo with no pumice!

I think the fact that it’s longer than the factory slot helps tremendously. I’ve noticed tons of pics of cam cover bushings installed with their slots at angles other than vertical too.

Its not until you get home that you find countless things wrong with it that did not show up on the first inspection. That is true with used cars also!

Put the tail light on today. Had to dremel a hole for it. Took the better part of 2 days to get it done. Not 16 hours of work, just 2 days.



Made a rubber gasket for tail light.



Put the speedometer on. Spray painted the Pingel rear motor mount so moulding sand won't stick to it. Going to try casting some copies of it in molasses based green sand.



Putting a new rear sprocket on using Big Twin rivets per Dr Dick. Need someone to hold it for me. Had bungs put on new tank for gas gauge.



Heads done. I've had them for a while. New exh. valves, +.002, which my indie said was nothing. Painted black. Brand-clean.




I forgot to mention earlier that I installed grease nipples for the swing arm bearings. The PO had hit the threads taking it off with a punch. That must mean the motor has been out in the past because there's no way to get your fingers in there? So I bought a right side nut to make a thread chaser, then cut the slots in the left side nut because I forgot what the hell I was doing. So I chased the threads and am waiting on a new left side nut. Probably will have to make a homemade spanner for it.




Drilled drainage holes at the bottom of the seat posts tubes and used a shotgun brush to clean out the tubes. I think when I put the springs in they are supposed to be liberally greased like crazy?

My '83 case doesn't have any c/s oil slot. Is that something only the early cases have???
