In my almost 50 years I have seen 1 aluminum button turn itself into a bb. I have seen a half dozen C clips destroy cylinders. I have only seen a couple spiral lock issues that I want to say were installed in C clip grooves. As for Teflon buttons I have never had a Teflon button failure. I have seen cylinder wear where Teflon buttons contaminated by metal wore light grooves. Today I use Teflon buttons anywhere a C clip or spiral lock is called for.

i was under the impression S&S sold the majority of ironhead stroker pistons.my 1000 bore version uses aluminum buttons.

To this day I couldn't tell you what happened to that one aluminum button. Top end developed an unusual rattle. It was disassembled and looked like we found a pearl.

We got past the point of making lists of why we can't.

In the process we learned a few lessons .

Some will be smart enough to play attention to experience and some won't.

I've used teflon buttons on some of my road race bikes but I have no preference of buttons over circlips for use on street motors.

So, I got real curious last night WHEN pin buttons (aka pin plugs) became common in aircraft.

I started looking through my Curtiss/Wright service manuals and got an answer.

Wright started using pin plugs in the 1930s. By 1940, they used pin plugs in most motors and by mid war in all motors (AFAICT). I don't have enough literature to cover all the war models.

Anyways, the last and amongst the most powerful of these motors was the r3350, which powered the B-29 clear through the Korean War and was used in commercial aviation until the early 1960s.

Right on page 97 of the overhaul manual (TC18EA manual, December 1956) it clearly states, remove pin plug then remove pin.

So, it appears these "considering" engineers thought enough of pin buttons to use them on high performance aircraft more than 80 years ago.

80 years . . . let that sink in for a few minutes.

I don't know in the USA, but here in GB, you can buy quite a handful of circlips for the cost of one PTFE button...

Hence why most accountants will prefer the circlips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
