There IS a Kitty Hawk...

But if in 1903 they had wanted to fly like a bird we might not have our beloved V Twins. Who knows if Indian or any of the others would have evolved.

Thank Heavens they didn't want to fly like a bird but instead, .... walk like a Turkey.

I shouldn't be so down on HD.

I guess it's easy with hindsight. And knowing how large companies work (or mostly don't) I should just appreciate they have lasted so long.

It will be a sad hing to see them go.

Willy G. Father of the Boat Tail Sportster.

How could I have forgotten his wrist pin expertise?

Wrist pin buttons? He might know something about conch buttons or leather streamers.

I lightly radius the buttons to fit better with the piston profile
This^^^

If you don't, the circumference (corners) will wear off first and make the buttons shorter.

If you even think the clip was twisted, expanded, etc. throw it away.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like overwelming recomendation to use buttons. So that's what I've decided to do. I trimmed mine down a bit to create the recommended .06" float. Strange that S&S would sell them this way with just .01" float. I can't be certain S&S supplied these buttons with the pistons because I bought the boxes of engine parts years ago from someone on this forum, Included in the boxes were pistons, rings, wrist pins and buttons. The Pistons are S&S branded, the rings are too. And I've seen on ebay piston kits from S&S that include wrist pins, the same pistons, same rings in the same packaging and same buttons in the same little brown paper baggie. So odds are this was originally a kit from S&S.
