Default Rich Products XR-1000 kit circa 1990

Attached is a Rich Products (Thunderheader) performance kit they sold for XR-1000's around 1990. Rich Products re-built my motor with this kit and some other mods and it ran VERY VERY GOOD. Unfortunatly, the crank let go. ( a common problem with XR's) from to much high rpm fun and it is now under repairs. But, it gave me many years of great service.

But, then I wouldn't have an excuse to re-build it again with some better goodies!

Somebody at HD, in their infinite wisdom, decided back in the late 70's that Sportsters didn't need a woodruff key on their sprocket shaft, because they didn't make enough torque that it mattered.

The result was a lot of Sportsters, especially hot rodded sportsters, and especially XR1000's, that spun their sprocket shaft.

Anyway, I've never seen this kit, but putting cams bigger than about .500 lift into an XR1000 or any other ironhead requires a lot of cam box clearancing. Anything bolt-in is awfully mild.

I put a set of 570XR Red Shifts into my XR1000 once and it scared me to death how much of the pinion race I had to carve away to make them fit.

Those "C" ratio gears should have been put into every ironhead ever made, IMO. The rpm drop from 3rd to 4th on the stock gears just made the motor fall on it's face.

Aaron,

You are correct that the cams Rich Prodiucts used did not exceed .500 lift.

They were the rough equivelent of what we would call today a N4/SE 497. Not. a very hot cam by todays standards but, it ran very well. It was a tad hotter than the factory "E" grind that had 485 lift. The stock cams were "D" grinds so, anything was an improvement over those.

The 2-1 header mentioned was the predicessor of what we know today as the Thunderheader. The only difference was that the prototype was un-baffled reverse cone megaphone. It sounds GREAT!

In about the mid 1990's, Rich Products closed up the machine shop and concentrated on the exhaust making business. The rest, is history.
