Mine was cracked too but I had to split the case anyway.

I bought a Pingel. I *think* you can cut the cracked one off with a Dremel.

I occasionally do aluminum sand casting. I have a half a mind to copy a few Pingels.

Interesting. I've held off buying a new mount since I won't be pulling the motor yet. The Pingels are fairly expensive, and I can get a NOS mount for about 55 bucks. If you do make some, I'd be interested.

make one from steel or aircraft aluminum.
it is a science with casting aluminum due to all the components that must be mixed in, that plus add in impurities and out gassing which creates voids, just look at the hd stuff!

True. Guy across the street had a Countach in for servicing. Oil all over the inside of the hood. Looked everywhere. Couldn't find the oil leak. Turns out there was a pinhole in the cast Al valve cover. Customer insisted on a new valve cover. I don't even know if Glyptal had been invented yet back then.

I have a spare 73 case. Porosity city. Stealer wanted more money to give the 6 x 8 section a coat of Glyptal (it's already been blasted and cleaned) than a can of Glyptal costs.

When I cast I use recycled lawnmower crankcases and always degas. Can't say I ever cut anything open though to see if I have any bubbles though.

Won’t fit. engine mounts for an '82-85 offsets the engine 13/32" to the left of the position for pre 1982 engines. I discovered this wile fitting my 80 engine into an 85 frame. Also the 82 and up engine mounts don’t have the hole in them for the kicker shaft to go through

Reading through this thread made me change the way I remove my engine, which I’ve been doing a lot lately while building my special. Bike upright using race stand. Two scissor jacks, one under front mount and one under rear. I don’t use them to lift; I stop raising them when they contact the case bottom, then continue a tiny bit more. Remove all hardware are the engine stays right where it was, with no stress on any mounting point. Wrestle engine out gently.

is the top end still on it?i made a bracket similar to the top motor mount bolt it to the heads and lift it out with a come-a-long.it's how my fsm explained removing the motor,but I didn't want to pull on the 1960 motor mount.

It’s an XL/XR mutt. You have to take the engine - bottom end, cylinders, heads, and rocker boxes all out as one. There are through studs from the cases to the heads and there’s no clearance to take the rocker boxes off while the engine’s in the frame. I’m looking forward to installing it and not taking it it for the foreseeable future. Getting there.
