Question 82 Sportster. First rebuild. Limited mechanical knowledge.

Hey guys. First timer here. Bought my uncle's 82 XLH1000 Anniversary Edition after it sat in a shed for 23 years. Alot of blood, sweat, tears, dollars, and time, we got her running. New clutch, primary cover, battery, generator rebuild, she was moving. End of summer comes, I got some miles on her, learned her personality if you will. Now I'm stripping her down to completely clean everything, paint, install brand new gaskets from front to back, and completely rewire. Here's where I need help. Am looking for a simplified wiring diagram. Im chopping it up a bit and am looking for that old school skinny look. Any wiring diagram would be great but the simpler the better. Have the Haynes manual but that only goes so far. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum from Iowa!

What all are you planning to chop off? There's really not too much other than the turn signals (front and back) that you can get rid of, wiring-wise. You'll still need the starting circuits, the ignition circuits, and the headlight and taillight/brake light circuits. The '82 came with factory electronic ignition. If somebody's replaced that with points, maybe that will simplify the wiring a little bit, but not much.

I suppose you could get rid of the "genny" light and the "oil" light, but I kept both of those on my bare-bones '69 short chop when I wired it up from scratch. I think it's wise to keep both of those, but again, it's your bike.

I'm not familiar with the Haynes manuals, but the official Factory Service Manual (FSM) has complete wiring diagrams in them.

As a fellow 82 owner, I would definitely suggest getting the Factory Service Manual and the Parts Book. The 82 is a weird, in-between, oddball sort of machine. There are a lot of parts that were new in that model year, and even some that are for that year only. I'm looking at you, front chain guard!

Oh, and be sure to check your flywheel timing marks! You could have either early or late wheels in there, and it makes a huge difference when you're trying to set your timing.

Maybe a compression test and just a top end. Gasket and oil lines. Yeah. O rings yeah. Intake rubbers yeah. Wheel seals and pack bearing. Over and out.

FPC: 99451-85A

Never go to an HD shop looking for parts unless you have the Factory Parts Catalog in hand

To buy your own use the part numbers. HD shop, indie motorcycle shop, eBay, other online sources

EDIT: BTW, the Haynes and Clymer manuals are also very good, but you do need the factory manuals. The Haynes has the best and the most pictures. The Clymer has info not in the other manuals. All, including the factory manuals have a few errors.
