Good find Paul. Interesting to know about the wheel spokes.

I did my swing a while back and made a thread about it. But the server where the pics were died so the thread is more or less useless. Will follow this thread

I don't think you will see anywhere near wheel breaking brake forces on a rear wheel. Maybe the front but not a rear.

It seems unlikely to me as well, but once the doubt is there it's best to err on the side of caution. Wouldn't make for an enjoyable ride wondering if my backwards running wheel was going to hold up or not.

I reckon it would have looked as if you had put the rear wheel in arse about face mate with the spokes facing the wrong way , it would have looked so wrong, so for me its a good call whatever the reason your not going to use it .

First play with the USD forks today. Have got bike down to frame and swingarm only now. Collected the Suzuki fork yokes from the guy who had machined and fitted a new stem, to fit the Big Twin Conversion bearing cups. Very pleased with his work. Old cups were in tight, new aftermarket cups, supposedly made for 52-81 Sportsters, are too loose in the steering head. Manufacturing error I guess, so will have to be replaced. The top one just pushes into the steering head by hand, at the bottom either cup pushes in easily for more than 3/4 or more of the way, both cups the same. Not a happy camper.
To make myself feel better I mocked it all up anyway and am pleased with the result. Trail is the same as my 76 at about 4.5 inches. Distance from bottom of the steering stem to axle is the same as well. That's what I'd figured but nice to know it actually is. Stiffer fork springs will be fitted to keep that the same when the engine weight etc is on the forks. The suzuki was a fair bit lighter so have to allow for that as well.
Here's how she looks, ignore the puke green wheel, it will be black one day :

Take it all apart again tomorrow until bearing cup issues are sorted out.
Paul
