The last one I did (prior to this topic) I added material to the bottom inside of the sleeve with JBWeld and machined that to accept the seal.

They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm hard headed

Thanks CChevelle, i hadn't seen that post.

For me the problem had cropped up in a big way on the engine in my sidecar and I decided that I would sort it out once and for all.
The hardest part about the job comes if the engine is still in the frame.
My race engine was out of the bike and I had another pump ready to go into my big bore stroker engine. So it just made sense to me to bite the bullet and get the job done.

And then I thought I'd share what I worked out because if someone does the measurements and lists materials it just makes it easier for others to do.

The race engine won't be started ow for at ;east a month (or two) so I'll know for sure that this fixes it. I'm pretty sure it will.

I have another 3 pumps to do now so might as well get on with them.

There's a;ways more than one way to skin a cat it seems.

It's hard for me to understand why HD never really addressed the problem. The oil transfer valve is just a band-aid approach.
I can't see how putting a seal into the pump where it belonged wouldn't have been easier and cheaper.

Harley probably imagined/saw mostly bikes ridden daily when wet sumping isn't a problem. (Guess they ride year 'round in Milwaukee).
At some point, ironheads become old and obsolete and us lovers of old iron aren't a loud voice.
Besides, any owner worth his salt is expected to upgrade every few years to the newer models and everybody knows they "never" have problems soooo.

Ferrous Head said I ripped him off he isn't telling the truth I never did the sort. He bought a pump and other motor parts from the same motor from a E Bay seller and had them sent to me for the pump modification's I do the parts came off a blown motor full or metal and the inner cover was even busted up. all the parts were junk I told him this . Ferrous Head then told me he contacted the seller and the seller gave him a full refund and keep the junk parts. Ferrous Head asked me to send the parts to him I agreed and told him how much it would cost with shipping and my time running around and he said forget it and said he was going to send someone over to get the junk. Now he runs me down he should be ashamed of himself for the lies he is telling everyone on the sportster sites. In my opinion he is a low life for doing this. I am a stand up guy with a %100 E Bay as my standing some of my proof = read my feedback.

I'm happy to let the members on here and elsewhere judge me.

The parts I bought were from inlinefabrication. Paul is a very honest man. I bought a 79 Sportster from him just a few months back. It was BETTER than the description he gave.
I would happily continue doing business with him.

I do not believe for one minute he sold me junk.

And yes, when he discovered what you had done he refunded me the price of the pump. That's the kind of man he is. He sent you a pre paid label to send the parts back to me and you just kept them.
But that doesn't exonerate you from trying to extort money from me.

You basically held me to ransom to get my parts. I KNOW how much it costs to ship an oil pump and a set of pushrods and it isn't $120. On any day in any language.

To make a long story even longer I went through this because (as I told you) I was pressed for time and wanted an oil pump for my race engine before a big race meeting coming up.

Anyway, I'm putting the information out there to help people avoid people like you.

No need to buy one of your overpriced pumps or put up with trash talk and long wait times.

You could have avoided all this by simply sending my parts back to Inlinefabrication as I requested.

But you insist on using forums to advertise your business and then trash talk anybody who doesn't agree that buying your product is the ONLY solution to the wet sump problem.

You are NOT an honest man and people should avoid doing business with you.

Let's be friends !

I started this thread to help the other members here improve their bikes. Told them what I know about oil pumps and wet sumps. I consider them to be my friends.

If you want to contribute to this thread how about you doing the same ?

A CAD drawing of the top hats you use would be a great start. My sketch is little better than a sketch. Real world information about these pumps. Measurements and pictures.

I spent about an hour yesterday explaining the oil return system to a new Ironhead owner here in Australia. I'm trying very hard to help him get onto the track here in Oz as that would mean the possibility of THREE IH Powered Sportsters fronting the grids at the next Championships. We're rolling back the clock.

Do feel free to expound your knowledge on this thread.

Maybe consider contributing to Sportsrepedia as well !

Who knows where this could end ! A new renaissance in Ironhead Oil Pumps !!

actually, you can get the top hats as you call them off the shelf. i too made a seal cup on the first one so that it is reversible but when i took up the challenge, made it as simple as can be by using off the shelf bushing from tractor supply, this style is not reversible.
