Default XR-750 valve angles

I did ask this on the XR Forum but those guys don't post for months on end.

Anyone here know what the included valve angles are on an XR ?

Would they be 68 degrees ?

68 degrees is what I've read repeatedly over the years as opposed to our 90.

68 is the number always quoted but it's actually 69 . 34.5 degree from vertical for int. & ex.

Thanks guys.

I'm looking at finishing the incomplete Strociek engine I have.

I'm thinking he took design cues from the alloy XR. Shallower combustion chamber smaller included valve angle. Central spark plug.






It's possible he designed it to use XR rocker boxes. My engine came without rocker boxes. Stock Sportster ones will bolt on and I don't know if the bolt pattern for XR boxes are the same as Sportster boxes.

The ports are nothing like XR.

Have you looked over this material?

There are photos showing the Strociek Billet heads with stock appearing rocker boxes (that are machined to have fins, a service Strociek offered)

Thanks guys. I'm curious because I have a set of Strociek heads and they have a shallower combustion chamber and smaller included valve angle than a Sportster head.

I'm thinking he may have taken some of his design cues from the alloy XR.

A;though he id go for a central spark plug position and the ports aren't anything like XR ports.

The engine I have is unlike any other I've seen.

Carb and exhaust are both on the left side of the engine.

So, not XR and not Sportster. This is a hybrid engine of sorts.


What's prompting all of this is I'm trying to work out how much power I might actually be able to get out of this engine if I do finish it.

I have it approved for Period 4 here in Australia but I need at least 130HP to be on a par with the big meth burning Honda's.

If I can do that an XR style frame would make the Honda's look like the fat ugly limps they are.

Strociek made all his engine and many other parts, machined out of solid billet aluminum (not castings) so it wouldn’t as hard for him to swap sides the ports are on.

That guy must have never slept. I knew about him from automotive drag racing products. He was into that as well.

The site I linked to has hundreds of photos, I just looked at a few. It’s possible that left side port heads such as yours are shown.

What you have looks good. Nice looking ports too. Are you ready to mock it up with valves, rockers and pushrods?

I did some reading about the XR750 a few years ago. The article was with an engine builder on one of the top race teams. I think he said they were getting 110 HP out of the 750. He said they had to freshen it up, top and bottom, after every race.

I've looked through and at a LOT od Strociek stuff. But haven't seen anything else quite like this one.
My own belief is it was a 'special" order for Dean Hummer, who raced sidecars. Dean raced a Sportster based chair back in the early 70;s.

Looks to be ready for stock XLR valves etc. They fit in any case. I don't think the engine was quite finished as it came with XL cams installed. My thinking is he was just about to establish clearances using those cams and from the figures he would work out what numbers he could safely run.

The gearbox is installed and just needs a primary setup.

Engine is 1324cc's so I believe the engine could develop the 130 HP I need. More would be a bonus. It would be REALLY nice if I didn't have to run Methanol and could use an electric start on the thing.

That’s interesting, about the valve angles. I’ve heard before that the XR head design was derived in some respects from the BSA Gold Star. The Goldie originally had a 75deg valve angle, reduced to 66.5 deg in later versions, so 69deg valve angle would be right in the range.

BSA also had a lot of experience of track racing cam profiles for cylinders in the sub-500cc size range. It would be interested to compare them with XR and XLR cams.
