Understood. My two intakes are .191 and .192 (per manufacturer) at TDC and exhausts are .141 and .142. Thanks.

I have a set of Q cams somewhere in the garage, I can try finding them tomorrow and measure the thickness for you if you would like. Just let me know.

I thought I responded to this already - guess not. Yes please!! Thank you for the offer. I'm most interested in the width of the number 2 and 3 lobes, but I'm guessing all four are the same width. Mine were off a 1981, but again, I'm guessing (incorrectly?) that all Q cam lobes are the same width. We'll see. My aftermarket lobes are all .431" wide, with slight variances among the four. Thank you for the offer.

The base circle of the cam is the diameter of the heel / lowest part of the lobe.



Lift is the difference between the base circle and the top or nose of the lobe.

The way to increase lift is a taller lobe on the stock base circle (typical performance cam), or smaller base circle (reduce the base circle, but the lobe is the same, typical performance regrind) or with a combination of both tall lobe and small base circle (the typical small base circle performance cam)

Small base circle cams tend to be rougher on the valve train and not as stable or strong, but they do solve clearance issues.

Once again, you learn something new everyday. Just spoke with cam maker. Apparently 1977-85 have little room for anything beyond stock cams. This means the grinder and I will become really friendly once these cases are apart again. The engine is together, less crank, and in the rolling frame so my friend can weld up some top motor mounts this weekend. They sent me photos of my era left case that had been clearanced for bigger cams. The job they did used a milling machine, and the end result looked nice and tidy. Mine won’t. These guys know a shit ton more about cams than me, though. At least I won’t have to do any work on the lobes. Thanks to everyone who mentioned clearancing work, even if I didn’t want to hear it.

Take a mirror and look at your lifter roller, you need about 0.05 inches shoulder for the roller to sit on the cam, the rest can go in the scrap bin. I use a lathe to do it.

I didnt read all the responses, so it may have been mentioned,but 1st thing is you need your dogbone thrust plates installed.
Any midsized lift .450-up definetly need clearancing of the pinion race, this is well known on 77-up cases.
Check the Andrews site for other info you may need, heads will need to be built properly....
Although I assume your using Redshift modified cams.

Yes, these are Redshift 505 cams timed in an XR1000 configuration, as the bike is an ‘81 with XR heads. The thrust plates were in place. I should note, in case they’re reading this, that Zippers has been nothing but helpful throughout the process. I had no idea about the (correctable) limitations on ‘77 and up cases. If I could start from scratch knowing what I know now, I would have used an early 1000 engine in the later ‘81 era frame. A kicker would be nice, as would be the ability to attach an early cam cover with vertical mag. Sorry if this sounds like whining. I’m just thinking in public
