You turned the cam on the lathe, or the roller? If it was the lobe, did the machining affect the surface hardness (or am I thinking too much). A little off the lobe would mean less off the case.

I had to take some off the lobes. That was 5yrs ago. Used a bench grinder.

I clearanced the cases with a dremel with the motor assembled and in the frame. Spent more time with the masking tape than it took to do the grinding in the cases. Tried the dremel on the cam lobes, but that would have taken all day. Bench grinder was the way to go on the cam lobes.

The side of the cam lobe. If you grind, tape up the lobe where the roller rides and tape it very well. One slip up...

Before you grind any lobe, I’d mock it up, cam and lifter, rotate it marked up with some Prussian blue paste or gear marking compound, etc... and be certain where the lifter roller rides.


As long as you go slow with grinding and keep it cool, it should be fine. Cutting with a lathe won’t change anything... unless the operator is an animal.

You machine the cam. Hold the cam on the shoulders gear side. Remove a bit of the corner or the full face of the lobe, your choice. You can also clearance with a grinders, just make sure you use a fine wheel and keep it cool.
