With the proper wiring diagram, you can see what wire colors run to each device.

Info off the top of my head (may be incomplete):

Here's a thread on eliminating the Turn Signal Module:
http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=847440
http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=573200

The ICM, TSM & Speedo all communicate thru the Serial Data Link - You may encounter error codes... Does your bike have the security function?

You need the Crank Position Sensor & the MAP Sensor for the engine plus the Vehicle Speed Sensor for the Speedo.

The GREY wire is power from the Ignition Fuse.
The ORANGE wire is power from the Instruments Fuse.
The ORANGE/White wire is power from the Accessory Fuse.
The BLUE wire is power from the Lights Fuse.
The BROWN/Grey wire is power from the Battery Fuse.

The WHITE/Violet wire is the Left TS wire from the Handlebars.
The VIOLET wire is the Left TS wire to the lights (front & rear).
The WHITE/Brown wire is the Right TS wire from the Handlebars.
The BROWN wire is the Right TS wire to the lights (front & rear).

The Factory Service Manual has pretty good diagrams, though for my 02 and 05 they are not in color, but are on fold out pages so they aren't too hard to read. IXL2Relax is correct on needing the Crank Position Sensor & the MAP Sensor, but there may be others necessary also. I'd sure want to do some reading in the manual to figure out where all the sensors are and what each does before trying to decide what's necessary and what isn't.

The part number displayed during diagnostics should reflect either TSM or TSSM - and the unit itself, located under the battery tray, can be examined.

If you don't want to mess with any wiring. Lowbrows offer the minimal wire harness kit for $200ish
