Default '03 883 custom only idles with the choke on

the '03 Sportster I inherited from my dad will only idle with the choke on.dies when you give it throttle, dies when you turn off the enrichener.sounds like a clogged jet to me.has the stock keihin cv carb -96a.has anyone else experienced this?

Clogged idle jet is first guess.
Could also be intake leak:
a. Intake rubber cracked or not seated
b. Vacuum hose to VOES or vacuum petcock off or cracked

If it sat for awhile, I'd go over the full checklist in the SP to make sure everything is good and reliable:

It's super easy to rebuild the carb and change out all the manifold gaskets. It'll probably purr like a kitten after that.

If the bike has been sitting, it won't get any worse waiting to be maintenanced - Just take your time and check it all over so you can enjoy the ride without worrying about various stuff breaking down...

Once you give it a good going over, with replacement of the seals and any cracked hoses, you'll find these models are quite reliable...

The battery & system ground wires are added onto the upper rear motor mount bolts - You'll want to be sure to check those wires for condition & clean & tighten them...

The one weak point the '98-'03 models have is the nosecone igniton (HD very quickly stopped making replacements) - Not everyone had problems, but it is something to keep an eye on - the Ultima aftermarket version has gotten a fair bit of usage around here and is considered the go-to replacement...

If it's going to sit awhile, run a little seafoam thru the system. Let it start doing the work for you.

Drain the gas tank down to a gallon or less, add the seafoam, and run the bike for a few minutes. Shet it down, and get back to it whenever.

the weather was pretty decent when I got home from work today so I thought I would drain the old gas from the tank and carb.no luck there.i removed the fuel line from the carb turned the petcock on no fuel from hose in reserve or on position.fsm says must have vacuum to operate.while removing the fuel inlet hose the carb was moving up and down and eventually came off of intake manifold.i thought I found my problem with the way it runs but fsm says that's how it's attached.with no clamp.so not much accomplished today.besides reading the fsm.
