My original rear shocks on my '83 XLH are 12 1/2" eye-to-eye with the bike free-standing. My front forks, presumed original, are 32" from top of fork nut to c/l of front axle. There's a pic in my profile someplace showing how it looks on its sidestand.

According to the manual, your 84 should have 6.75" ground clearance.

Is the seat thinner than what you had on the 70?

Default Ground clearance

Thanks, for input, now have to measure and compare; because of virus emergency it’s not easy to get to my workshop. Were you referring to PARTS manual? Service manual doesn’t seem to cover this. As far as seat height, my ‘70 had an aluminum seat that I hammered from a piece of scrap. it was bolted right to the frame, maybe 1/4 inch thick. Everybody please stay safe and healthy, R.

Factory service manual has ground clearance, dry weight, etc. at the beginning of the Chassis section.

If the bike feels too low you could get a thicker seat. Honestly my 82 feels on the edge of too tall for me, but I'm average height and the seat is fairly thick.

Never had any ground clearance problems, but I don't hop curbs or anything so I've never worried about it.

Thanks,Big, what brought clearance issue to mind was bottoming out the day I bought it when loading onto pickup truck w/ramp. Needed help lifting back end at top of ramp. Will read manual more closely now. Peace, .......R

ferret the top big bolt on the primary cover is the filler for the trans.to check level stand the bike up as straight as you can.theres an allen bolt about forward of the middle(not one of the lower cover bolts)that's almost level with the front nut.while your filling watch the level hole.when oil starts to seep out stop your filling and let it go then put the bolt back in when the drizzle stops.man you know where to got to put oil in the oil tank.have fun.remember to put a pan under the left side case while its draining or your gonna have a giant mess.and don't let the bike fall down.i put a piece of 2x4 under the kick stand and turn the front end to the left
