I have the Quick detach windshield and used to take it off in the warmer months until my face shield was so covered with bugs one day I had to stop to wipe it off.
There was some type of insect hatch that day and they were flying in swarms out of the corn fields. (there is more than corn in Indiana )
The windshield also helps to keep bugs off the face shield for me.

I don't have a windshield and use a 3/4 helmet. You are missing out on all the free organic protein that Indiana provides.

Rain, hail, big bugs, birds and bird droppings, road spray from oncoming traffic, gravel from the tires of trucks in front of me....these are some of my favorite things -- you know, the song from The Sound of Music? Every time I clean the stuff off my face shield or see a new scratch or chip in it, I love it even more. Yesterday, something hit my face shield that sounded like a bullet -- don't know what it was, but I didn't feel a thing.
For some reason, I feel like I have MORE freedom with my face shield by not having to blink or duck when things fly at my face. But, each to his own...
My windshield is a 14" tall H-D detachable half-shield. I can see over the top of it and yet the wind is deflected over top of me. It's the best of both worlds. If something is heavier than the wind, it hits my face shield instead of my face. The ventilation is excellent and my face stays cool while I am in motion. If I'm not in motion, I lift the face shield with just a flip of my wrist. Life is good.

I wouldn’t have been able to do this without a windshield. Hopefully, IBA will bless my documentation.

Over 1000 miles in one day - impressive!!!! I agree, riding without a windshield is exhausting. I feel like I'm attached to a drag chute and holding onto the handlebars is an effort at higher speeds.
I like your comment about your bike not being butt jewelry. I've started referring to my 2005 as "Patina" because she is showing her age very gracefully.

boomerguy,
The 1000/24 was a last minute decision to check something off my bucket-list. My driveway to Exit-30 in Sturgis is about 900 miles. I’ve done that trip many times, in both directions, in 23-25 hours. While getting ready to leave for Sturgis this year, I saw that there was no rain anywhere in the center of the country on 8/6 & 8/7 and I decided to give it a shot. God bless rubber-mounted engines, H-D Convertible windshields, Mustang seats, I-90, and 80 mph speed limits in SD & WY!
LOL, the wife, and the ex-wife, will tell you that patina is one of my go-to words.

For me, it is an indispensable "security element".
It has protected me from stones and sticks that come off trucks.
also, of birds and large insects that cross the path.
It is an element of security that can save your life, an eye, or your physical integrity.
It is like the complete case, indispensable.
I know of a case of a person who was riding an H-D CVO motorcycle, with his companion wife, without winshield and with a paila helmet, without face protection.
A big bird hit him in the face, knocked him out, and they fell, to the road.
RESULT:
Dead motorcycle driver, R.I.P., and
His wife seriously injured.
FOR ME:
IT'S NOT SOMETHING FOR AESTHETICS.
IT IS NOT ALSO IT IS TO STOP THE WIND
IT IS A SAFETY ELEMENT, THAT PROTECTS THE RIDER PERMANENTLY.
IT IS NOT A JOKE!.

Is it just me or do the riders without windshields and face shields always frown, like they're mad at somebody or in pain? If they enjoy their ride, why don't they smile? I'm always smiling behind my full-face shield and windshield!

Rode with a screen for the first time since 1979 yesterday. Took a Heritage Classic for a short test ride from Bowker HD Preston to just outside Southport. Not very windy but I was careful after the last time with a screen on a borrowed BMW R75. Loved the wind protection at 70 on the dual carriageways with not as much buffeting as I expected.
