Question 'Initializing' a new SE ignition module? >

I am ready to install an SE ignition module with a 7,000 rpm rev limiter in my 04 Sporty prior to a cam change and head work. Nallin told me that the bike would need to go to the dealer to get the new module 'initialized' with the H-D diagnostic computor (or whatever it's called). I told them about this procedure that was once posted on our old message board ... He was unaware of this procedure.

Ok ... Has anyone here actually used the procedure below on there 04-05 Sporty after installing a new SE module?

Does it have to be done and does it actually work? (I don't want to drag this biker to the Stealer)

Initializing 04 XL1200 Ignition Module

Please note that you have to perform steps 5-7 a total of 3 times. Step 6 takes 10 minutes each time and the ignition and lights are ON. This takes a total of 30 minutes to complete. I would suggest that you disconnect the headlight to reduce the drain on the battery.

1. Install the new ICM (Ignition Control Module)

2. Set RUN/OFF switch to RUN. - Verify that the security lamp is not blinking (vehicle is disarmed).

3. Turn Ignition key to ON. - TSSM enables starter relay.

4. Press starter button 1 time. The vehicle will start and stall. No stored password for new part causes bad password DTC, fuel flow is stopped.

5. Wait 10 seconds. Security Lamp will illuminate. ECM enters password learning mode. If Ignition key is cycled learning mode exits.

6. After 10 minutes, ECM completes auto learn mode. Security lamp turns off.

7. Quickly turn Ignition Key Off then ON.

8. Repeat steps 5-7 two more times.

9. (last time) Turn Ignition Key off. Wait at least 15 seconds before turning Ignition back on.

Password learning is complete

They are not plug and play. Your bike won't start if you just plug it in. And, the module can only be used with the bike it was initially synced with. I used the proceedure with my Nallin kit and H-D ignition module. Worked great.

I had to do the same when I installed the SE module. Used the proceedure and it worked for me.
I asked Daytona Twin Tec if this was needed for their TC88A, and was told it was not required.

Just installed my SE module. The engine ran for about 1/2 second and stopped.

Did the initialization procedure above and everything is good with the world.

Very good idea to unhook your headlight. 30 minutes is a long time to burn that headlight bulb doing this procedure. Don't know how long the battery would last.

Cool... Hopefully I'll be "plugging and playing" by Monday. If my "honeydew" list gets completed, I can work on the bike... I think she's going shopping and I will have lots of time!!!!
