Hello everyone,
So I posted the following in general the discussion a few days ago, posting it again here in hopes an Ironhead person will come across it. Probably should have posted here first anyways.

I'm looking to buy an old iron head. I have experience working on older motorcycles, I rebuilt a Commando last winter and have restored Honda's etc...
Not afraid of a wrench, or an iron head.

I am aware that forums like these are the BEST place to come for advice before buying. You guys are the experts.
Right off the bat looking for first impressions, info, anything strange visually, incorrect etc... Plus any general information and advice, things to look for. I've read through the buyers advice and checklist here, good advice.

Seller provided me with a few photos, not the best but enough. I'll post them here.

The Sportster has been around for 62+ years and there are so many aftermarket companies that make parts for it, it'll make your head spin. It is almost impossible to find one that is "original". Someone along the line may have changed parts from newer or older bikes and added aftermarket items to suit their personal tastes. Sometimes when a seller says the bike is all original it just means "he" hasn't added or removed anything since "he" purchased it.
Make sure it has a clear title and everything is in order. Double check the VIN from bike to said title. '69 and older, the VIN is on the engine crankcase. '70-'80 the VIN is on the engine crankcase and should match the VIN on the right side of steering neck. '81-'85 frame has the VIN on the right side and the engine case has an abbreviated version.
Most states license and register by the frame number only. There are many threads on this forum about "where exactly" to locate engine case VIN's and a lot of good advice if you should run into something that doesn't look right.
If you find something you just have to have, CHECK THE NUMBERS FIRST! before dropping any money on it. Like I said before, the Sportster has been around for a long, long time and you never know for certain what has been done to it.

If you're looking for original, that one has some, but not others. If the price is cheap, you could do it.
Obviously, the riser and bars, fenders, tank, chrome in some places. But, if cheap, parts are still reasonable if the numbers match.

the frame neck and engine numbers , right side under the carb should match
4AXXXXXH7 anywhere else is a bogus number

Just judging by the big battery, it’s set up like an xlh. Could be a bonus unless you were looking for a pure xlch. If the price is right, don’t let that stuff stop you though.

It is probably an XLH, seller has it advertised as an XLCH. Makes you wonder what else he may have overlooked. Appears to be electric start only, would be adding a kickstart first thing. Never owned a bike with a working E start. Still young enough to kick em all.

Won't know for sure until I have a look at the numbers.

This is the kind of info that while available, I wouldn't necessarily know to look for (aside from VIN). Thanks everyone.
