I guess I'm getting old! My 79 had open straights on it when I bought it. I liked the sound when it idled, but hated the racket when it was going down the road at 60 mph. The final straw for them was when I noticed the engine stopped pulling at mid range. I started putting together a more or less stock 79 X pipe system. However, it has a set of new smaller mufflers and not the big baloney set that was original. A nice mellow sound and a good power curve. Whenever I hear someone talk about straight pipes, it reminds me of a friend's experience. Several years ago, he bought a HD Road Glide. He was the typical baby boomer biker, rode in the 60s-70s a bit and never had a bike since. So he gets this glide and he is at the HD shop every weekend getting something added or changed. He decided he wanted this particular exhaust system and everyone in the dealership tried to talk him out of it. Well, his ego wouldn't let him leave without it, so several hundred dollars later he had the loudest motorcycle on the road. The next Monday he went roaring into his work place, the noise bounced off the buildings setting off several car alarms. He thought this was funny, so he revved it up again setting off more car alarms. He was met at the door by security and it's been a long two years looking for a new IT job when you are 60 years old!
