Welcome my friend! Starting an ironhead, especially a kick only CH, can be a challenge if you've never done it before. Here's the sequence I use for mine ( carb S&S Super E with acclerator pump):

- Ignition off
- Full choke
- Twist throttle once (accelerator pump squirts)
- Kick through one cylinder
- Twist throttle again
- Kick through second cylinder
- Bring crank to compression and ready to kick
- Ignition on
- Kick like hell

At this point it should start right up. If it pops out the carb, it's lean and you didn't prime it enough or you kicked too slow. If it backfires, your timing is probably off.

If it doesn't start the first try and didn't pop out the carb or backfire (a little hiccup is okay), then kick it again.

If it fails to start on the second kick, turn off the ignition, close choke, open the throttle all the way and kick through three or four times. Then start back at the top.


The first time I tried to start mine I had my buddies out there watching me, we were all drinking some beers, and it was hot as hell Ohio summer. I spent about 45 minutes kicking and kicking, and doing everything every which way. After much ridicule, and my buddies getting shamed failing to start it as well, we put it away and I came back to it the next day. Read a similar procedure to above and tried that. Over time I've perfected it for my bike. Each one is different, so don't think you have to do it exactly how I do as it may not even work for your bike that way! (But it should get you pretty close.)

The carb is a Bendix, not the Tillotson, and when I got it, the bike wasn't running. Turns out the rear pushrods were WAY out of whack to where the intake/exhaust in the rear weren't even opening and closing, the points were gapped wrong, the static timing was unable to be set because of wear on part of the points that rides on the timing cam, and the carb had a leak. Took care of all of that, and put in a fresh battery, and it still won't go, so I'm going to tweak the carb settings a bit and see if that helps.


I'll be quizzing the Ironhead forum guys shortly, and thanks for all the advice and welcomes!
