The factory understanding is that they will sell you the bike, then will sell you all the additional parts to make it right....just the way it is.

I've seen somewhere that the average H-D rider puts about 2000 miles a year on their bike. Harley equips the bikes for the average rider... 5'10" tall, 180 lbs., & 2000 miles a year. In other words, the perpetual noob. The suspension, etc., on the stock bike works fine for the "average" rider. Hence the lowest common denominator factory build parts. I don't think that most of the regular participants on this forum qualify as "average" riders. Want a better H-D ride? Build it yourself. That pretty well describes most of us, here, I'd say. And I don't believe it's much different for the riders of some other brands, as well, although some of those other manufacturers do tend to have a broad range of more specialized bikes. Sport, sport/touring, naked, standard, dirt, etc. If you look at the variety available, you can probly find one of them that will suit you in stock form. But, where's the fun in that?

I must agree completely of your comments about the standard suspension. They truly are shit.
When you go to purchase aftermount shocks may I suggest that you investigate the amount of travel in the shock length.
It is important to set sag better and give you a better chance for comfort and longer travel helps. You should also notice that once rear shocks are replaced with better quality units it will expose the front suspension as more inadequate than it felt previous,
as many of us have discovered.
You can get the suspension on the sportsters to perform excellent with quality suspension and some experimentation with setting up correctly. Ride Safe.

The fun is in being able to ride the bike and not spend any extra money on getting it to do what your initial purchase was supposed to do. Any other product purchased like that would make me livid.

If you want a Sportster, as I did, you accept the fact that you're getting a "budget build". If you want a classic American bike, as I did, you get a Harley. If you want an appliance, you get a UJM or a BMW. I grew up in the '60s. To me, a motor cycle is a somewhat noisy, vibrating, fun to ride MACHINE. Not a means of placid, mindless transportation. You can spend as much, or as little, as you wish to make it suitable for your self. No bike or car that I have ever owned has been the "perfect fit". I've modified them all, even to the minimal extent of fashioning a custom arm rest for my 2018 Toyota Highlander. The arm rest on the door didn't fit me, so I made one that did. You think you can get exactly what you want for $38k? No, you cannot. Just as you can't get a perfect fit in a $12k bike. Unless maybe you happen to be that "average" rider I spoke of earlier. YMMV, as mine surely did.

Ill take a Sporty over a geezer glide any day.

Over the last 12 years Ive asked countless "Harley" riders if they wanted to race, even a guy with a $25,000 S&S drag motor in his.

I get the same answer: "No"

I upgraded from an 03 Dynasore, never care to ride another fat sweat hog again.
