Default Foot peg stud not lining up with motor cut out

Hello all,

I've enjoyed the many and varied posts by a great group of members and thought someone could shed some light on my question. I've searched extensively but couldn't find anything remotely close to answering the question I have.

I recently acquired an ironhead sportster as part of a trade. The bike is a 1974 XLCH frame with a 1976 XLH motor as per the frame number and the engine number. The bike seems to run pretty good so I thought I would keep it and make a few changes here and there.

The bike came with forward controls with right side shift and left side brake. I ordered the parts to put the controls back to the stock mid controls. This is when I realized the stud on the frame to mount the foot pegs does not line up with the cut outs on the engine. As far as I can tell the engine is mounted in the correct position in the frame other than the foot peg mounts. The studs look like they are about 1" too far forward. To correct the alignment I would have to move the studs toward the rear about 1" on either side or move the engine forward 1". This doesn't make sense to me so I'm trying to understand how this is not aligned. More importantly, I'd like to find out how to get the studs lined up with the position of the engine so that I can install my mid foot controls. Thanks in advance for everyone's help

It's all normal. The stock foot peg has about a 1" offset to the rear that puts it roughly lined up with the cut out in the cover.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check it out tomorrow with the new parts I ordered. If everything lines up that would be a huge relief!

There are 3 different left side footrests
4 different right sides

You want a 50948-71 left and a 50949-67 right it looks like.
Unless you want the 75-6 cable brake, I'd prefer a 74 brake over the cable.

But I cant ride a right side shift anymore, my brain refuses to translate. Don't know how I used to do it?

I had to reinstall the primary cover and take off the exhaust to test fit the brackets but it looks like the brackets I got fit. The brackets I ordered are from VTwin # 27-1735 which includes both left and right side brackets. It just looked really odd the offset from the stud to the notch in the cover which is what threw me off.

Now the next issue is to find some foot pegs. I know you can buy the large female mount foot pegs but does anyone know an easy way to adapt the newer style male pegs to these brackets? Thanks for your help.
