Yep. A thrust bearing makes no sense to me either. I would throw a regular bearing in there and call it a done job. It looks like a bearing will still press into place so why not try to salvage it first? All that will cost is the price of the bearing.

I see why they did it now. It's still a poor design, but maybe you can use a 7200B throwout bearing in place of it (or similar design)?

It lasted 8 years. I may be mistaken, but isn’t this bike used on gravel/dirt roads often? It appears that it has never been serviced judging from the condition of the hardware. I would say that if I am correct on those statements, it served a very usable life. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase the same item, but perhaps this time find a way to service the bearing a bit more frequently. Or replace the bearing itself at the 7 year mark.

If I’m thinking of a different bike... carry on.

Yes I’m partly responsible for the failure. I should of serviced it more often for sure. Unfortunately i didn’t know or forgot it was just a thrust bearing in there. Live and learn.

I still have the oem bracket for the idler pulley at home, I’ll use that for now and maybe down the track take a look at fitting some different type of bearings in the freespirits bracket. I’m not sure there’s enough meat left on the outer edge to do this though. I have a friend who is a machinist, he will point me in the right direction.

Well, your machinist should be able to make something way better. The reason for the thrust bearing is because in this design the two races each mount in one half of the pivot and I assume the bolt sets the load on the balls? If you use a regular bearing you will need to mount it to one of the plates, and the bolt will just go through the second plate and solidly tighten to the inner race.

Now that I am thinking this through I am thinking that they used the bearing that they used because a standard bearing would have eventually fallen out of the plate it is pressed into due to movement over time.

So, bottom line is that your plan to buy another one sounds like the most logical course of action.

Yes that’s right, the thrust bearings allow it to pivot. But there is no sideways load or very little. The load comes from the belt pushing down on the idler pulley. I don’t think thrust bearings are designed to take that sort of load. So a poor design imo.

I’ll see what my friend has to say about retaining and making standard ball bearings work in there.

I found the original idler bracket. Bonus is I stored it with the original pulley bolt screwed into it.



I’ll put it on the bike later, I still have night shift lag at the moment.
