Tom, you can do the tranny for the cost of a couple gears, possibly some bearings and gaskets. Top end noise could be a multitude of things, thankfully it’s not difficult pulling the top end off. Do you have access to a factory service manual? You can find a lot of threads here on site, many with pictures and step by step. Do a google search found at the bottom of the Forum page.

Hey Paul,

I'm pretty sure I can handle this. I've actually got another Tranny sitting here, an 'ebay' purchase, but it's complete and should be just a bolt-in replacement after pulling the old one. It's just finding the time to do it. Likewise, I'm pretty confident about the top end repair as well. I don't know if you're familiar with Zippers or not, but I worked there for a while. Personally, I consider them to be the the #1 HD 'Performance' Shop on the planet! I could expound on this, and if asked, I will. Suffice it to say that I've done more than my share of 'top end' jobs. But, like changing the tranny, it's all about having the time to get it done. That, (and this applies to anything HD)....that and 'Murphy's Law'!! Seems any time I think something will be 'simple' or 'straight foreward'.....my buddy 'Murphy' shows his ugly face!! I may just attempt to 'off' the bike 'as is' and take my lumps.....OR.....make a 'winter project' out of it. Last time I did that what I thought might be a month or two of wrenching turned out to be an over-night project. Once I get rolling.....I move pretty quickly. Sadly, I sold my bike lift...which was a nice 'drive-on' lift and I had it actually in the back room of my house. Did a number of projects on that lift.....but then just slowed down on it all and got an offer I couldn't refuse. Projects like R&R of a Sportster Tranny or a complete 'top end job' are sure a lot easier with the bike on a lift! Guess we'll see how motivated I get in the next few weeks............

Definitely let us know how they turn out. I have an old Triumph with a gear pop issue I need to address soon. Just gotta find the time!

Those Harbor Freight lift tables can be had for $300 and 20% off coupons are easy to come by. Beats crawling around on the ground!

Check out “popping in and out of first gear. I had the same problem. Repacked first gear, made little difference. Put a Baker Shift Barrel and not only did it fix the problem but much easier to find first gear. I know, getting into the trans looks so intimidating but it was a pice of chocolate cake
