I just read the part about not taking the drain plug out at the front of the engine. Is it really that bad? I am guessing that these do not have a level of oil in the engine crankcase?

There are various plugs on the bottom of the crankcase halves depending on the year. There is one that I believe is directly under the flywheel on some early models. That one is not a drain plug, but is a part of the manufacturing process. If you remove it you risk wrecking the threads - this cannot be repaired without dismantling the entire engine as there is not sufficient space for a tap.

I believe that your 1985 does not have this plug, and any plugs that are there can probably be removed. However, best to take some clear pictures, post them here on this forum, and seek advice.

This pic of my 1978 shows an example of the crankcase numbers, and also of an extra plug on the bottom of the cases which is safe to remove - it is an Allen key bolt. I believe the unsafe ones are all 1960s and possibly some early 1970s, but I have not had the opportunity to see any so I really do not know...

I looked under there last nite there is nothing. I did see an allen I believe. I read the manual. Should have before asking. They say its not necessary to drain the crankcase as it does not accumulate oil.
