Your throw out bearing might be the issue, I would typically expect it to increase your free play considerably and pretty much stay that way until you re-adjusted the clutch as the bearing failure will exaggerate free play and remain fairly consistent. This free play would cause drag showing the low speed and neutral issues similar to what you've experienced and mentioned.
It's literally one step further than you did when you adjusted your clutch down at the hub to then check the bearing condition.
A failed one will be properly wobbly and may have one or more ball bearings missing, which will necessitate the primary cover coming off.
Even a new bearing has a small amount of wobble to it which is taken out once the clutch is adjusted properly.
If you're finding in a ride that the free play keeps changing occasionally then it is more likely to be the anti rattle plate in the centre of your clutch pack causing the issue as that inconsistent play is a fairly common external symptom. As suggested, brass in the oil is another thing to look out for. 14,000 isn't too early for that to happen...There seems to be no time or mileage constraint to the rivets going for a walk.

Maybe try & find a quiet corner in a multi storey car park or under a bridge if you don't get any dry weather. Or wait till the missus is in bed and slip it into the front room ;o)

Get yourself a tarp, rope and some bricks. I built a workshop for the bike but before that and still for the cars and truck, I string a tarp up to provide shelter from the elements. You gotta do what you gotta do to get the job done.

QUICK AND CLEAN CHECK..

pull off the derby cover.
touch the adjuster screw with your fingertip..
if you have side to side movement other then a little wiggle, then you have a bad throw out bearing..

if you want, replace with a side thrust bearing, number 7200b

take off adjustment lock nut, loosen the adjuster all the way, remove the cable,
remove snap ring holding the adjuster to the hub, and remove the assembly.

replace bearing..

no special tools needed.

fingers crossed when i get the derby off its got play its not the rivets

This is an old thread and just want to add that while the focus is on the throw out bearing many have had spring plate failure in the clutch at low mileages, which will give symptoms of not disengaging completely, hard or inability to find neutral and difficult shifting. As has been said previously it’s easy to access the throwout bearing through the derby cover on rubbermounts. If the bearing feels good check your fluid for signs of the brass rivets in the “grenade plate” to have worn down. This will jam up your clutch pack giving you the above symptoms. Keep it safe,

Make a note though that bearing could feel great when you spin it by hand but when it goes there is no warning, disintegration has started. For the price of a new one it may make sense to be proactive and just replace it. I’ll add that I just did mine along with a new primary chain and tensioner assembly then topped off with new fluid,(70,000+ miles on the bearing, 115,000 miles on the chain. First impression is a smoother feel and lighter release but, it may not be completely attributed to the bearing with all the new periphery parts, just saying.
