Default 48 Handling

Ive moved up from my Iron to a 48 that Ive had since last year and it definately has differant handling traits to the 19" wheel on the Iron. My 883 was never a cause for concern in the handling area, but the 48 does seem to be un nerving at 75mph plus, only really noticable when going straight on motorways. It almost feels like the front wheel becomes flighty, and maybe wants to wobble or weave. The only other time I ever experianced this was on my Transalp, but that was always down to the wind getting under the fairing and making the 21" wheel feel detached. So not sure why the 48 is being like this. Ive changed tyres from the standard scorcher to Avon Cobras, checked and double checked pressure, checked suspension settings. Its a new bike so steering head bearings should be fine. Below 70 mph there is nil cause to concern me
Anyone else have a similar experiance ??

Mines been stable all the way to 120. Only time I had a problem with my handling was when I had a slightly loose head stem and another when I had loose spokes.
Could try adjusting the head stem, make sure it's in spec.
But other than that, it's very stable.

I traded in a '98 XLH (19" front) for a '15 Custom (16" front). The Custom usually has the same H-D Convertible windshield that was on the XLH. The OEM Scorcher rear tire, with 13K, was replaced with another Scorcher before my trip to Sturgis last year.

Compared to the XLH, the Custom feels very comfortable and with noticably less weaving when I cruise at 75-80 for long stretches on the highway. The few times that I've ridden at 85-95 the Custom was still very stable. Removing the windshield on either bike did not change highway stability.

When H-D went to the 49 mm fork tubes on the Forty-Eight in '16, the rake of the fork tubes was decreased. That change increased trail which improves straight line stability.

Question: What year is your Forty-Eight?

I also have a '15 Custom; same front wheel and tyre as the '48. It's very noticeably quicker and nimbler (ie: less stable) steering than the 21" front Customs when cornering and low to medium speed manoeuvring, but nevertheless still very stable at highway speeds.

I replaced the front end on my ‘07 1200CX with a front off a ‘16 forty eight. I also replaced the rear wheel with the matching ‘16 wheel. I put a set of American Elite tires on it. When the shop was mounting the tires they found the wheel bearings in the front were badly worn. It surprised me that a wheel a little over a year old would have shot bearings, but I guess it happens. It rides awesome at all speeds and I like it better than the 19” wheel. The 49mm forks feel a lot better than the old ones.
Long story short: check your bearings.

+1 for front bearings. Had to replace my 2016 48 front bearings before it was a year old. Switched to "AllBallsRacing" bearings at a fraction of the cost without any issues.

I had to adjust the neck and replace a warped rotor as well. I blame the rotor on giving me a deathwobble when letting go of the bars. Changed that out and its been smooth sailing ever since.

Actually come to thing of it, I had to replace the bearings, rotor, forktube gaskets, re-torque neck bearings, all in under a year. I think the bearing failure can be blamed on washing the bike and them holding water. They were actually really rusty.
