I run with just a 1/2" hole drilled into the end blank and for me it's perfect.
I hate bikes with loud for loud's sake pipes, all they do is annoy people.
I have put the stock silencers on as a back to back test and although ok at tick over, they have a very annoying drone at cruising speeds.
Also, around here it's horse country and have often stopped and switched off to let them go past. Always get a thank you wave from the riders.
It's a bit like oil choices, you will never get everyone to agree what's best, so each to their own.

I was reading thru this thread and realized I never posted only voted. I heard a set of Magnflo's on a DynaWideGlide back in 2017 and realized, that was the sound I was looking for. So I ordered a set for a Sportster from MagnFlo and installed them (May 2017). Ah, the sweetest Sound! Now that I've been running them for over a year now, the steel, spiralled baffle tubes rattle when the pipes are cold but quit when they're hot. I've e-mailed MagnFlo about this..no replies. So, can I recommend them? Well the outsides look good and they seem to be holding up, otherwise the cold rattle probably keeps the "gremlins" at bay. So, I guess I'm Neutral on the recommending part. They sure sound good, tho.

Im changing since voting. Got the straightshots and I'll try them with the baffles they come with first.
Then switch to the HP+ baffles. They've got a nice deep tone and probably better low end. Time will tell.

Well. I put krome werks 10 inch baffles in my 40 inch drags. Seemed to really quiet it down but my masshole inspection station still rejected them because in his words. They are straight pipes. Im like, there are baffles in there! He said i dont care, they are straight pipes. So I put some paugcho pipes on that have a lump in them (muffler). Maybe some day i will get my sticker and then put the (straight pipes) back on

Good plan, although I might see if another shop would be less dick-ish. Motorcycle exhaust requirements in Mass seem rather ill-defined with regard to sound level. They want to see something that looks OEM and sounds OEM...both measures are pretty subjective given the range of sound output from various makes/models.

As draconian as PA can be, at least they set a measurable limit...something on the order of 85dB from 50 feet.

They also leave a little bit of wiggle on the definition of the exhaust system components with this:

"A motor cycle shall be equipped with a muffler or other effective noise-suppressing system in good working order and in constant operation".

Baffle=noise suppression.

If they have an issue with the dB level here, they have to measure. Most don't though. Exhausts are so easily modified/changed that the only way an inspection station could get pinched is if LE saw you leave the shop and knew you were there for a fresh sticker.

Khav. It was more that though. Handlebars above shoulder height, directionals too close together, straight pipes. Gave me a reject with no warning. When all fixed and went back. He said, damn thats a nice little sportster. Here in mass you have to ride in order to inspect.

Ahhhh...ok. At least the gent appreciates the machinery

My '79 still needs signals/reflectors to pass as well as baffles...just waiting for it to warm up. Harumph.
