True statement "all the little bits add up after awhile". Some mods while minute actually improve effects from other mods thus compounding result. The opposite can also be seen in deferring maintenance or allowing a small problem to go unresolved.

for my race engines I do whatever i can. It's just a matter of economics.

For me, the true cost of racing has to include not just the price of the engine but everything it takes to get us to the start line.

That means:
Transportation, accommodation, entry fees, fuel, spares etc.

We cam travel 4,000 kilometers for some race meetings. I can't afford to get there and have o miss a race (or the whole meeting) on account of some minor issue.

One year it was a flat front tire. Not a single person in the pits had a spare 16 inch tube. It's only us Period 3 sidecar guys that use them. A $5.00 item nearly cost me several thousand dollars that I spent to be there. We had arrived on the Friday and it happened to be a public holiday. All the bike shops were shut. Some smart arse yelled out "Yer ridin' a Massey Davidson, try the tractor shop."

And funnily enough, they were open and had 3 in stock.

Just a light deburr/ polish of any sharp edges on the piston tops... the dome and valve pockets. Dont the polish the skirts. Look over the ring grooves and pin bores, lock grooves for anything that needs detailing.

I dont think it’s worth having the pistons tops coated in a 9.5:1 engine, but two pistons is not that big of an expense.

With the basically "stock" 900 engines I used to run on pump gas ceramic coating was always done. But running them WOT for fairly long periods on a race track is nothing like running them on the road.
On methanol it just isn't necessary.
On pump gas the engines would never survive no matter what I did to the pistons.

Most of those S&S pistons have a small raised dot about 3/8" in diameter located top center on the crown that is a leftover from TRW's manufacturing process. I don't remember if that set has been done yet , but that dot should be filed smooth.

Otherwise they need nothing but the right clearance which is what they really care about.

And yes carbon is a very good insulator.

Actually that set I purchased from you are very nice. The little raised dot thing does not appear to have been filed down but you can hardly feel it with a finger nail.
I did want to verify with you a couple things I am unsure of. I cannot see much if any difference in valve pockets nor can I see any offset in piston pin. I will put valve relief that is stamped with oversize .040 to the intake unless you tell me otherwise.
