Hi all
about half way through my re-build of my 1974 Harley XLH,
seem to be having a issue with timing though so i would like to just check on the following

when i have lined up the Slash (vertical Line) on crank in the middle of viewing hole, and then made sure points are just opening on small lobe can you confirm back where should the following components positions should be

Front Cylinder Piston
Front Cylinder Inlet Valve
Front Cylinder exhaust Valves

Rear Cylinder Piston
Rear Cylinder Inlet Valve
Rear Cylinder exhaust Valves

Also any more tips on setting up timing would be appreciated

This should help with finding the Compression stroke:

With the piston on TDC of the compression stroke: (otherwise referred to as “TDC Compression”)
Both valves are closed.
Both corresponding cams are on their base circle.

On the front cylinder, both valves will be closed, tappets at their lowest point.

Static timing will only get you in the ballpark. Here's the basics, front cylinder on compression stroke, timing line on flywheel center of hole. Narrow lobe should be lining up with points. Hook up a test light to points, loosen backing plate, rotate points cam to full advance, rotate backing plate to point that test light illuminates showing that points just broke open. Lock down backing plate. Hook up your timing light and verify.

Since you asked about the rear piston too:
  • with front cyl @ 40° BTDC, rear piston will be at 5° ATDC on a 1000cc motor (but who really cares. Get the front cyl located correctly & you're done)
  • this won't guarantee the front cyl is on compression stroke though. Follow the instructions the others have already posted.
But you may wish to ensure that you (or the previous owner) haven't mashed down any roll pins in the mechanical advance assembly..... pics of what that assembly looks like, over here in this post --> http://xlforum.net/forums/showpost.p...9&postcount=17

All Thanks for info above think i need to double check mechanical advance assembly like the doctor suggested as the backing plate is at the end of its slots when i set it up correctly and i though this was strange, though i cant blame previous owner i have had this off when doing rebuild

You did not mention that you were advancing the points cam when static timing. Often overlooked. May not be the case, just throwing that out there.

Double check the two roll pins, then triple check that you are on the front cylinder compression stroke before finding the advance mark.
