Starting to notice a trend I guess where ironheads are now going for used sportster evo prices.
I understand why we are passionate about our poor old Ironheads. When we were 18 nothing else would touch them for performance or coolness.

But by the time the Evo's came out, the Sportster was a ...... waht ? Actually, what was it ?
It was no longer a Superbike. Smaller Jap bikes made it eat dust.

It wasn't "Cool and Groovy" - not when there were so many other big bore blasters around.

Harley kind of went after the commuter market. Cheap and cheerful, what the English liked to call "Grey Porridge". They payed on their name and reputation, which they didn't earn, their customers did.

Will people try to restore a 1990 Sportster in the future ?

I kind of think not. Why exactly would you bother ?

And fairly soon, I suspect. There might not be a big market for retored Ironheads.

Heh!

https://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/d/...210028277.html

I'm not paying 3800 for an Ironhead that needs a trailer to haul it away.
It would have to be a very Very nice Ironhead (that could be ridden) to be worth 3800

I think it is the end of the riding season and guys are selling off toys that will have to be stored when they can't be ridden. Guys are wanting to maximise value at this time, knowing that prices will drop like a rock after the first rain or when the holidays come around. The time to buy is Thanksgiving to January.

Last chance to buy and ride an Ironhead this year!!!

These bikes will be available May & June as basket cases (unfinished projects) when guys with cabin fever tear down bikes purchased this year and realize how much work it is to reassemble them (when they realize the trick parts they bought on the net don't bolt on to their Ironhead).

That's not an ironhead! That's a butchered up, rode hard, 4 yr old evo Sportster! Ugly seat, apehangers, no front fender.

The market is flooded with used bikes right now. I know one guy that's been buying up cheap evo big twins and parting them out? Claims the parts are worth more than a running bike?

"Claims the parts are worth more than a running bike?"
Absolutely.
One piece at a time.
Frame with title $700
Cases with good numbers $400
Cylinders $100+
Heads $150+
Transmission $400
Forks $200-300+
Brakes $100
Wheels $75-100 each
it all adds up

1981 Ironhead wants $1,500 for it. Maybe good for parts or project

Take a chain with you so you can check compression.

Take note, there are many missing parts starting with F&R brake calipers.....

This looks like a deal - $3,500 but does not state the year; however, it is a 1000cc

That looks like a decent one.
Has an Oil Filter instead of a generator so that is a L84 or 85.
If it is nice and clean and you can fill the tank and ride it til it's empty without having to work on it it might be worth the $.

Not on CL but worth a look

For anyone contemplating building a 70's style chopper. Here's one already done for you.

I bought a bike from this man and he's as honest as they come.
