That’s a lot of work sitting there. In the grand scope of things, that is an inexpensive asking price.
You have to remember, to some people 8k isn’t very much money. That’s the type of person who would buy that.

I’d sure like to own that ‘85 but not for that price.
There are no Tolerances on cutaways. No fits, no lapping or line reaming. Make a profile with a Sharpie, start plunging and then climb for finish. With a good collection of non serviceable parts I could probably knock one of those out in a couple days on my mill and then color it up with Glyptal and take my chances on Fleabay.
The drive box is another thing altogether. That has my ballocks tingling and would take some time and effort to do right.
I’m not one of those folks with 8k to bling up my man cave - but thanks for the post !

Ok, so I'm curious now.
What price would you put on the engine if it hadn't been scalloped and what price on the work that was done.
My thinking is 3 grand will get you an engine. 4 grand ?
I would expect there's a weeks work to do all that.
Although it's never going to be anything other than art.
Would my display engine be worth a lot less because it's not cut up ?

Buy the parts. How much? All of them.
Layout time on all the parts. A lot of them.
Setup, fixtures, ect. A lot of parts.
Machine time of all those parts. Agreed tolerances are broad, but parts still need to function.
Paint, polish and reassemble those parts.
Build stand
Purchase drive and elec motor
Final assembly.
This is obviously not for everyone, but how do you guys bid a job?
$100 hr (good round #). Looks like easily 80 + hrs to me in labor alone.
Not looking for any type of arguments here, but most here can’t measure valve spring installed height in an entire afternoon. How long do you think it would take to accomplish this? The guys that can do it in a week reap the monetary rewards on a project of this type. How many do you think could really get it done?
A guy like this (there are way more than one) would be a buyer. He very well could have spent more $ on some of the signs hanging in that “garage”.
Unless you see a different route to get to a finished product like this, I respectfully disagree. If you do, I would love to hear it.
and no, I don’t think a partial temp stack up of some parts would even be remotely close to similar “value”. But then again, something is only worth what some will pay for it.

Mike,
You are dead right about the machining time. I would quote that out along those lines.
Just the fixturing to hold while machining.....
I had a salesman once. EVERYTHING was easy to him. He would say "you just put the boring head in and blah blah...
He would go home while I was on the mill at midnight.
Salesman theory: anything is easy if you don't have to do it.

I get what you guys are saying about what goes into a cutaway motor, but isn't that like saying I've got $10,000 into this bike, so that's what I'll sell it for?

Here's another display engine.
Just twice the price.
Mind you, last time I priced on of these they were $14K and came as a kit. Needed work as well as assembly.
This one might be right on the money. Or not.
