Default Oil Pump

Hey guys so I am curious, I have another thread going after chasing some issues with the old girl. its a 79 xlh1000. She was parked for about 5 years. Got it back on the road, took a good 20 mile drive and everything was happy then poof. Long story short the oil pump crapped out. Now the debate. Find a used OEM pump 77 to 85 and a new drive gear, or use the 86 to 90 oil pump which holds higher pressure, BUT id need to plumb a check valve in place and either a cooler or a filter of some sort. I am also wondering if anyones done this swap. I have been working with the sporsterpedia page and Hippiesmac on this swap and trying to see if anyone has attempted it. The pumps are identical in size drive etc.
