Thumbs up 1974 Ironhead sportster xlch

Just picked up a 74 Sportster with 9626 miles and a shovelhead tank that turned out bad once I removed the old paint, but before that I never had full throttle, went through and made sure the carb was clean its a zenith and then adjusted the points and timing and then the tank issue so I am not sure if its been fixed just yet. Ordered a new tank that should be here friday so now im just cleaning and setting up other things on the bike.

Yeah its a little dirty but over all a very good find I think. The shovel head tank had a crap paint job so I removed the old and found about 50 pin holes and a baseball sized dent that had been bondo'ed over. Oh well I get a 4.2 gallon with almost the same shape today.

A 4 gal tank is too big for a sporty.

Guys talk about range but a 3 gal tank will get you well over 90 miles.

Your keister will need a break at 75 miles. If you are traveling through a dead zone and need extra fuel there are camping fuel bottles or even yard machine fuel sold in quart/liter cans.
I like the camping fuel bottles, more impact resistant.....

I'll see today, if it looks too fat I'll send it back but either way I'm just happy to keep moving it forward.

LTD
be sure to check the front turn signals don't make contact with the tank on full lock
