Default Oil pressure stays up 20min after shut of

Hi
I have 86 xhl 1200 conversion. I noticed that two of my lifter housing was leaking. Because of my cylinders was in the way the entire top end had to come off. So I put new seals and gaskets in top end and put together again. I just ran it on starter with plugs out. The oil pressure light switches of emeditly but takes 20min to come on again. Checked that there is oil returning to tank when running with starter.
Is this something to be worried about?
Or just a bad pressure switch maybe?
Thankful for help
Best regards from Sweden

I'm not sure if this is the direction of your question, but..
On cold startup, the oil will be thicker and the pressure at the switch will be higher.
Expect 60-100 psi on cold startup.
The switch is spring activated.
When high pressure hits it, the spring acts slower to retract.
It should return to normal as I imagine most do.
The fact that it does open and close is what it should do.

I tested my pressure switch and found that to be true. Results here.
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...:ref:svcproc30

I made up a rig and initially let too much pressure hit the switch and it reacted in that way.

Thanks. That's was kinda what I wanted to know. My main worry is that I maybe have to high oil pressure due to blockage or something.... since I got that lifterhouse leakage and now the oilpressure switch acting pretty weird. I also but an big oil filter from a big twin on and worried about if that doesn't work properly.
Having lots of motor trust issues at the moment : )

You can rig up a pressure gauge off the filter pad to help settle your pressure worries.
(or the tappet hole plug on 86)
Here is the Sportsterpedia page on installing a gauge.
http://www.sportsterpedia.com/doku.p...talk:ref:oil15

Oil switch can act weird if the wire hooked to it is loose also.
You have oil returning so you have flow. That's the biggest worry, no flow.
Pressure will be high on cold startup, then the oil heats up and you'll see pressure dropping.

Here is some information on the oil switch.

Expected oil pressures here.

Mine does exactly the same since I have it (more than 10 years). Never had any oil related issues.

There has been some concern with using a big twin oil filter on a Sporty. If its for an Evo big twin its ok. Something about the oil pump on twin cam big twins having more pressure. Evo engines run a 30 micron filter. The twin cam can get away with a smaller micron rating due to the oil pump. Theoretically if you run a smaller micron rating but they filter as bigger it should be ok as there is more filter media. How much bigger is the unknown factor. A lot of the guys on the Bad Weather Bikers forum (Buell enthusiasts) seem to have no issue with running a filter for a small block Ford.

I have heard sportsters should stay away from the 5 micron filters. Too restrictive

Just hearsay though.

We know a Sportster gerotor oil pump will make 60-100 psi on cold startup.
Even if the filter is more restrictive, wouldn't that just simply raise the pressure between the pump and filter a little?
Hot oil is either gonna flow thru the filter or bust the feed line?
The flow just can't sit there if the filter blocks the path.
I'd think the pump would win that battle.

Hippy,
Can't argue that. You're points all correct.

More restriction may reduce flow volume is what I'm saying, although it might not matter anyway

I can't remember where I picked-up that hearsay.....would be nice if someone chimed in
