You didn't mention if you have longer springs or a spacer to make up the difference. Your tubes look to be 6 or 8 inches over. Just curious.

Don't recall whether there was a spacer. I think that the forks are 6" over.

I went back to stock forks last winter while cleaning up my '71 XLCH. The 8" extended forks that were on the bike were not usable at all because of the pitting.
I called "Forking by Frank" and they were very helpful.. The new forks were flawless and a perfect fit in every way.
Mine simply had an 8 inch spacer on top the spring. All parts below were stock and in very nice shape. I cleaned everything up and replace all the seals, add some fork oil...works like new.

On the early 1967 and earlier forks that I have worked on,back in the day, springs were expensive to make so they used a piece of 1/2 inch rod that spaced the spring down. I supplied a picture of that 1/2 inch rod on the threaded end it has a heavy washer on it and that screws into the end of number 9 on your factory fork. So if this is the fork I am thinking you have, you should have the factory springs in there. If it is the fork I am thinking, if you jack up the front of your bike and take the weight off of the fork, you should be able to take the big nut off of the fork tube and no big spring should fly out. Down inside that hole there is another threaded piece that has two holes in it that are about 1/8 of an inch around. That unscrews and the spring is under it. On the bottom of the fork where the axel goes there is a nut or a screw, that lets you take the guts out of the fork. If you do have that 1/2 inch rod in there, if that rod that screws off of #9 is 6 inches long, not counting the threads, your fork is extended 6 inches. If that rod is 8 inches long your fork is extended 8. If your chrome is good on your fork tubes, I have shortened them. If you have access or a job shop that can put these in a lathe for you it is inexpensive to do. You simply cut the fork tubes off whatever length they were extended and the only hard part is the bottom of the fork tube, the hole inside, is bigger than the rest of the fork tube and it is bored quite crudely just enough to for the shock to go in so if you measure how far in they were in the tubes before you cut them and then have someone cut them and take a boring bar and re-do that hole the depth it has to be to get the shock back in. The other picture of the fancy funnel is what Harley tells you to do because when you fill the forks with oil they take about4 1/2 oz. oil that has to be measured accurately. the oil goes thru those two tiny holes in that plug you took out on top. What I do is take your top nut for your fork tube go to the home store get 6 inches of plastic pipe that size, screw it in the top part of the fork tube and put 4 1/2 oz. oil in it, seal with duct tape so not to loose any oil, need the correct amount of oil.
