Well, his old 38 amp three phase is doing quite well in my 2004”R”, about a year and a half and close to 20,000 miles. I did have two issues one self induced the other a Q.C. Miss on their part. Spoke with Karl at Cycle Electric and resolved quickly. My 2006”R” has been running the same system for over 6 years and 30,000+ miles with no issue. I don’t run a lot of accessories but the stock set up, 22 amp, was overwhelmed with heated grips, heated vest and a pair of driving lights. I experimented running a B.T. 38 amp single phase, 2 of them actually, but they both fried the output wires coming off the stator. I did learn that I could travel approx. 500 miles with a fully charged battery and no charging system, again two different times.

Years ago I ran across a guy I only knew as Mustang who had a 57 Mack cabover that was a super tricked out custom truck. His solution for custom or obsolete parts was to keep spares of everything that might be needed at home, marked and ready so a phone call to his wife or a trusted neighbor would have the exact part air freighted as soon as he needed it. The next to last time I saw him he showed up in the same hotel across from a dealership my truck was at getting warranty work done, a day after I checked in. His truck broke and he limped it to the motel. He had his part shipped air freight from home and fixed in the motel lot while the dealership was still waiting on the parts to come in to fix mine.

The last time I saw him I was climbing the Eisenhower tunnel grade with a fairly light load and had pulled out to pass a couple slower moving trucks. When I tucked it back into the right lane, he came around me with a load of steel beams on his trailer like I was moving slow. That old Mack would run.

Actually the number of times a stock part has failed me is quite small. I may have had two regulators fail me but I was also pulling too much power through them.

Unfortunately I don't think that would work for me. When I take a week long trip if something fails during the later half of the trip it may not reach me in time to get home so I can go back to work. Likewise, it I am competing in the Iron Butt Rally I don't have the day or two to wait for the part to come from home. I do carry a spare drive belt with me during the rally since some dealers do not stock them. But I can only carry so much

I went and looked at the Iron Butt webpage, it looks like any sort of major failure would screw that up.

But it do look like it might be fun to try some of that. I'm going to have to look into that a little deeper.
