I'm actually pretty good where I'm at now. I'll probably try the 42 pilot tho and turn the IMS out. But I'm thinking I may have to shim the needle with the smaller pilot. It's all a balancing act. I'll probably end up back at the 180 main then too. Possibly even a 175.
Personally, I'm less concerned with the final number of turns of the IMS than I am about getting the Transfer Ports properly fueled so that the operation of the throttle plate & needle do not need to be distorted to compensate for the incorrect Transfer Port operation...

Getting the Transfer operation right with the right Slow Jet is critical - the slow jet is the only control over the fuel mix to the Transfer Ports - After getting the Slow Jet right for the Transfer Ports, THEN, adjust the IMS so the Idle Port operation works correctly with the Slow Jet you needed for the Transfer operation...

This is the reason I (and others) suggest that the 45 slow jet is usually (tho not always) better than the 42 - It makes the Transfer Ports richer - which means the throttle plate & needle can stay more closed so that the transition is actually happening on the Transfer Ports and not on the extra throttle plate opening to suck more fuel thru the needle jet...

Every engine is slightly different - so you do need to tune the carb to what the engine needs... But try to minimize opening that throttle or pulling that needle (weak spring, shims, etc.) too soon...

Good Luck...

See and that's why I thought about toying with the N65A. It would/should allow me to stay/go with a bigger pilot. It would (I believe) also get into the taper sooner (shorter needle) without shimming or a weaker spring. Im thinking it may be a smoother transition. That's my thinking anyway.
Like I said I seem to be pretty good. I'm more like 1 3/4 turns on the IMS. 1 1/2 only on the super hot days of mid 90s.
Maybe put the 45 back in with this needle. I just want to be sure I have it as best as it can possibly be. I'm just not totally convinced it's there. Maybe just me being an anal perfectionist as the wife says. lol

When you run the idle mixture screw all the way out and can't make the idle worse you need a bigger idle jet.

When you have the throttle blade positioned (at idle) where it should be so you're not pulling transfer fuel at idle you frequently need a bigger idle jet.

Slinger Airflow Werks has a jet kit for the Sportster, SAW-022 if it still exists.
